Event Summary:

On November 3rd, 2016 the Government of Alberta announced its endorsement of the AESO’s recommendations for the Renewable Electricity Program (REP). The REP intention is to encourage the development of 5,000 MW of renewable electricity generation capacity connected to the Alberta grid between 2016 and 2030. The AESO is responsible for implementing and administering the program and has been mandated to engage with stakeholders on the Renewable Electricity Support Agreement (RESA). The first competition opened earlier this year with the successful bidders awarded at the end of 2017. This program will require $25 billion of new investment in electricity generation over the next 14 years, eliminate nearly 6GW of coal generation, ramp up renewable deployment, and launch a new capacity market.
