Event Summary:

This session will provide a regulatory update on the mining industry in Indonesia and what to expect in the coming twelve months. We will explore the nascent smelter industry that is developing in Indonesia due to government bans on the export of unprocessed ore and how the currently regulatory regime is impacting on the opportunities to finance and develop related industries including smelting projects and mine mouth power projects.

Since the ban came into effect in January 2014, the Government has vacillated between waving a stick and dangling a carrot to encourage compliance. This has created uncertainty in the sector and challenges in developing projects. Further regulatory changes continue to impact the sector, including the recent currency regulations restricting the use of foreign currency in Indonesia.

This session will be chaired by Rick Beckmann, a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright and a founding member of the Indonesian Smelter and Mineral Processing Association (ISPA) and will feature a panel of industry participants currently navigating the challenges of the regime to develop and finance mine projects in Indonesia, and their perspectives on the way forward.

The full agenda will be announced shortly.
