Event Summary:

Over the past decade the discovery of colossal resource finds in East Africa has propelled the region to being one of the most dynamic investment hubs among emerging markets. These new energy sources, as well as fast-growing consumer markets in the region, are attracting high-level attention like never before. Regional integration has long been advanced as a solution to underdevelopment in East Africa, and there are ambitious plans to overhaul the region’s deficient infrastructure to take advantage of the new oil & gas discoveries: investments worth up to $100bn are planned over the next 25 years in power and railway networks alone.

However, weak institutional capacity and a lack of transparency will make efficient management of new extractive industries very challenging. Meanwhile the long timeline for infrastructure projects – pipelines, power generation, road and rail - to deliver benefits will expose them to political stability and security considerations. The political crisis and conflict in South Sudan has stalled plans for a regional pipeline involving South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda and growing levels of sectarian and inter-communal violence, terrorism and banditry pose risks in remote border areas across the region.

Experts from across the industry will provide an overview of the current dynamics in East Africa for existing and prospective investors and a forecast for how these will evolve into the future.
