IPFA Australia: Sydney: Hybrid Renewable Projects – A Fad or the Future?

Australia saw increasingly larger onshore wind farms begin development in 2017, rapidly approaching the average size of European offshore wind farms. The number of large scale solar PV projects in Australia to reach financial close more than doubled last year. Now with the rise of battery storage and the reality that on a standalone basis renewable energy technologies do not operate 24/7, Australia’s green landscape is embracing hybrid solutions through co-location of solar, wind and storage combinations.

With the successful financial close of Kennedy Energy Park, and the announcement of both the Port Augusta Renewable Park and UK billionaire Sanjeev Gupta’s Whyalla revolution, developers in Australia are increasingly seeking to combine technologies to maximise output, generate efficiencies, manage reliability expectations and deliver innovative solutions for investors and consumers.

This focus on hybrid projects has led to developers, financiers and advisers questioning how project finance structures can be adapted for multiple technologies within the bankability framework. The session will commence with a case study of one of these pioneering projects, following which the panel will discuss hybrid projects and new structures being adopted for these projects.
