IPFA Europe: Frankfurt: Challenges and Implementation of Fibre Cable in Germany – Connecting the Country
Germany is still behind in rolling out a fiber-optic network across the country. Current household penetration of FTTH/B in Germany amounts to 2.3% only, whereas the European average is around 14%. This puts Germany at one of the last positions, ranking just ahead of countries such as Serbia and Croatia. Effectively, internet users, particularly in rural areas, are cut-off from the ongoing digitalization while still being dependent on an outdated copper infrastructure. Chancellor Merkel and the “grand coalition” have identified the availability of high speed Internet access across the nation as key topic but roll-out progress so far has still been limited. The new goal is to offer fibre cable to everyone by 2025 and an investment amount of EUR 12bn has been put aside for this. However, people close to the situation criticize that more ambitious aims should be set on government level in order to substantially modernize German infrastructure.
Attendees will gain valuable insights and have the opportunity to discuss with senior industry practitioners and financial experts the opportunities and challenges in building and financing a modern fibre cable network in Germany.
