H&S Risks - Why They Matter to Investors and Debt Providers
ERM and Freshfields are co-hosting a panel discussion on why Health&Safety risks are important for equity investors debt providers, and what are possible solutions to these challenges.
Health & Safety risks in energy and infrastructure projects have long been seen as an issue to be managed exclusively by general contractors during construction and O&M service providers during operation. While contractors and service providers are certainly best positioned to address H&S risks, social and commercial developments over the last decade have significantly increased investors' exposure to H&S incidents which would have passed unnoticed ten or twenty years ago:
The growing complexity of sub-contracting and supply chains, more detailed documentation, the spread of informal information through social media; and growing public awareness of working conditions in emerging and frontier markets all contribute to commercial and reputational risks for equity investors and debt providers.
On the other hand, the general progress of human rights awareness and environmental & social management has resulted in a growing number of different standards, initiatives and practices adopted by investors to mitigate these risks, most recently the 2019 edition of the Equator Principles. The event explores challenges and solutions from the different perspectives of investors, contractors and professional advisers.
