IPFA Africa: Nairobi: Where Next for Project Finance in East Africa, a New Dawn or just a Passing Cloud?

The majority of the Infrastructure projects in SSA in previous years have been carried out on the Sovereigns’ Balance sheet. On-Balance Sheet projects have increased the Debt to GDP levels, calling into the question the sustainability of this approach and whether there is an opportunity to develop the Project Finance model.

East Africa has completed a number of project financing transactions primarily in the power sector and PPP initiatives in the infrastructure sector are on the rise. The Oil and Gas potential in the region presents a new wave of project finance opportunities in the region.

The industry players (Developers, Financiers, Regulators etc) will have to play a crucial role to keep pushing the boundary in order for East Africa to realise its potential and be a model for Sub-Saharan Africa in the infrastructure financing space.

With this context, this event will discuss:
- How does East Africa emerge on top in the Oil and Gas journey?
- Do the current PPP initiatives being taken foster a suitable atmosphere to facilitate Oil & Gas project financing?
- How do we bridge the Infrastructure financing gap?
- Is there an opportunity for Alternative investors to spur projects and what more can the Government do to encourage their participation?
- Why has the journey to a fully integrated and operational East African Power Pool faced strong headwinds?

The full agenda will be announced shortly.
