ASEAN Regional Grid – An Imperative for Regional Energy Transition?
Most Utilities in the region are grappling with the energy trilemma of security, affordability and sustainability. It is becoming increasingly clear that no country can solve this trilemma on a standalone basis, given various constraints. However, collectively the region may be able to address it effectively. Projects like the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Interconnection Project, bi-lateral power imports, and EMA’s current power import tender for 4 GW could be seen as a stepping stone towards more intra-regional power transfers within ASEAN. While the challenges for a regional grid may seem immense, the opportunity it presents would mean all stakeholders need to come together to bring it to fruition.
We invite Future Leaders to join this interactive session where we will bring regulators, utility players, the private sector, technology companies, and financial institutions to discuss possible solutions and options.
