IPFA Future Leaders Network Continental Europe
Germany’s Heat Transition – Opportunities and Challenges of Expanding District Heating Networks
The IPFA's "Future Leaders Network" has set itself the guiding theme of "Accelerating Net Zero" for 2024.
The transformation of the heating sector has a key role to play here. In Germany, the federal government has set the target of a CO2-neutral heat supply by 2045. The Heat Planning Act (WPG), which recently came into force, emphasises the role of district heating, which is to be promoted through expansion plans as part of municipal heat planning.
Estimates of the investments required by 2030 for the expansion and decarbonisation of district heating range from EUR 30 to 50 billion. The discussion panel brings together experts from various disciplines to shed light on the possibilities of realising these ambitious goals from the perspectives of financing, regulation and sustainability.
Discussion Points:
- Legal and regulatory framework for district heating in Germany - current developments and outlook
- Decarbonisation of heat production and the role of district heating in achieving climate targets
- Mobilisation of (private) capital for expansion and decarbonisation objectives
