Tunnel Vision: A Site Visit of the Liefkenshoek Railway Tunnel

What does it take to build 16.2 km a freight-only railway tunnel under a tidal river – and keep trains moving through one of Europe’s busiest ports?

Built and operated under a long-term PPP model, the Liefkenshoek Railway Tunnel project tackled complex challenges including underground works beneath a tidal river, integration with existing rail infrastructure, and maintaining freight flow in Europe’s second-largest port.

Step underground with us to explore the Infrastructure Deal of the Year 2008 (PFI) and explore how future industry leaders can draw lessons in risk-sharing, collaboration, and systems thinking. Whether you're growing in finance, engineering, project delivery, or public policy, this project has something to teach the next generation shaping infrastructure’s future.

Project Presentation: Kris Laureys, Project Director, Invesis
