Global Webinar | The Future of PPPs: Time for a New Model?
Public-private partnerships, in their various guises, have been taking a bit of a beating in some jurisdictions over recent years (the PFI / PF2 model was abandoned in England by the previous government) while being promoted as the answer to the demand for new infrastructure in others. We have also seen a number of PFI projects become “distressed” in the UK leading to disputes, terminations, insolvencies and a sense that infrastructure investors are losing faith in the UK as a destination for their investments.
As a consequence, we have an industry raising its voice and pushing back on what they see as the public sector’s lack of “partnership” with a call for government in the UK to intervene and help bring stability to the market – particularly if government look to the private sector to participate in funding the growing demand for new infrastructure. There is evidence of similar behaviours in Canada and Australia.
So, is it time to consider a new and improved PPP model that addresses some of the arrangements that have led to the PPP model falling from favour? Our panel will consider the key elements of what a new model might look like including a focus on addressing some of the key failings of the old model.
Discussion points:
- Where did the old model go wrong?
- Is this universally the case?
- Is there any demand for a new model? If so, is that confined to only particular markets?
- What might need to be fixed in a new model?
Speakers will soon be announced.
