Beyond HEFA: Financing the Next Generation of Aviation Fuels
Aviation is among the hardest sectors to decarbonise, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the primary lever to cut emissions this decade. Today's supply comes almost entirely from HEFA which is refined from used cooking oil and waste fats. Constrained feedstock means this pathway alone cannot meet the demand created by mandates across Europe, the United Kingdom and, from 2026, Singapore. The next wave of capacity must come from alcohol-to-jet and power-to-liquid (e-SAF), technologies that are far less proven and far harder to finance.
This discussion will examine the two-speed SAF landscape. Panellists will explore how proven, waste-based pathways can be scaled and financed today, and how developers, investors and lenders can underwrite first-of-a-kind e-SAF plants while weighing technology risk, long-term offtake, and the role of blended finance, grants and guarantees in getting frontier projects to financial close.
